CPM Politburo member Sitaram Yechury could well be the dark horse in the sweepstakes leading up to government formation after May 16. In an extensive interview to TSI’s Satish Chapparike, he says post-poll he is willing to assume the mantle of a Third Front Prime Ministership, if his party decides so.

What is your reading of this general election? Could it be a turning point in Indian politics?

I think this is a defining election and it will be defining moment of Indian politics. The result of this election and post-poll political moves will shape the future of Indian politics. Of course, this election will also decide the future of India. The elections are taking place in the background of the worst economic crisis the world has ever faced. The impact of recession on our country is huge. So, to protect our people we have to have our own policies. That’s the reason for the deep churning in the political arena. The parties that were with Congress or BJP are drifting away and all of them are thinking something new. All this is happening because at lower levels, there is a deep sense of relief. Relief from Congress and BJP and their policies. The people want relief from their hardships.

How is the mood in CPI (M)? Will it retain its tally of 42 Lok Sabha seats?

The mood in our party is very good. The pundits may say anything. They may say we are losing heavily in West Bengal and Kerala this time. We are confident about ourselves and let us talk about this on May 16th evening. The party-wise outcome in this election will be one small issue. On the other hand, in a larger sense, there cannot be an alternative today without the Left. I will assure you, post election, Left will play a major role and we will be a very prominent player in the future. This is not a question of absolute numbers, but a question of relative role; and that cannot be marginalised.

Tell me how serious are you about the Third Front?

To be frank, we are honestly hoping for the emergence of a strong and committed Third Front post elections. We are working for it because, India needs a non-Congress or non-BJP-led government. In this scenario we think India badly needs an alternative policy and we are working for such a secular option.

Do you think it signals the end of the Manmohan Singh and L.K. Advani era in India?

Well, we are working towards that. Let’s see what happens after May 16. Political pundits may say anything. But since 1996 till date, coalitions have been formed after all major elections and it is on that basis that a common minimum programme was formed. The alternative, we think, will strongly emerge this time. In 1996, the United Front was set up post-polls. In 1998 the NDA was formed after the elections. In 2004 too, the UPA came into being only after the elections. In 2009, the same thing will happen. But this time the Third Front will emerge stronger than NDA or UPA

The Great Dynastic Bazaar

The Samajwadi Party too is hanging on to “family”. Usha Verma, daughter of popular SP MP from Hardoi, Parmailal, has been fielded from the same seat. And the BJP, hoping no doubt to cash in on the Nehru-Gandhi charisma, has roped in Sanjay Gandhi’s widow Maneka from Aonla; while her drop-a-bombshell-every-minute son Varun is fighting from Pilibhit.

The list includes other illustrious names as well. Sitting MP from Balia, Surajbhan Singh, has passed on his mantle to his wife. The influential Bhumihar leader – Suraj da to his friends – started out as a petty criminal. As he is convicted, and can’t contest, he has got wife Veena Singh to try “her luck” on “his behalf” from adjoining Nawada! Veena is illiterate – though her husband did slightly better! He flunked his matriculation exams!

Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav remains a darling of the vernacular media. This long time muscleman has not only muscled his own way into power, but also made sure that his wife Ranjeeta Ranjan too got into Parliament. For now, Pappu is out of jail; though he can’t contest. But never mind! His wife will – from Supaul – on an LJP ticket. There is also Rama Devi, wife of slain RJD Minister Brij Bihari Prasad, who has shifted from her home turf, Motihari, to adjoining Seohar. She is the BJP candidate there.

In Chhattisgarh, Renu Jogi, wife of former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi, has been fielded by the Congress from Bilaspur. She has a tough battle ahead of her against discredited BJP MP Dilip Singh Judeo. Karuna Shukla, niece of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, is contesting from Korba.

Indeed even in “enlightened” West Bengal, dynastic politics is having a field day. “Malda satrap” and Congress veteran A.B.A Ghani Khan Chaudary’s niece is contesting from his home bastion. And Mausam Benazir Noor has just been elected to Bengal Assembly in a by-election where she is the youngest MLA. The party has also given a ticket to Deepa Munshi, wife of ex-cabinet minister

Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, from Raiganj. Like Benazir, she too is a sitting MLA. Trinamool Congress has fielded Dr Ratna Dey Nag from Hoogli. Ratna is the daughter of Gopal Das Nag, a popular minister in the Siddharth Shanker Ray cabinet in the 1970s.

“Most accidents happen within 5 miles of your home, so maybe it’s more dangerous to stay at home,” started out the author of "The World’s Most Dangerous Places", Robert Young Pelton – make that RYP – in a conversation with Indira Parthasarathy. With an itinerary that reads like a death wish, RYP has 'Come Back Alive' (one of his books, and website) from intense conflict zones including Chechnya, Sierra Leone, Iraq and the like, and in fact would be in Afghanistan for the umpteenth time, when this hits print. Recession doesn't quite sound so scary any more...

Good times to travel

I think they are… There is always danger in any element of travel. When you travel to foreign countries, many tourists think because they’ve paid money, somehow everything is magically safe. Since 9/11, a lot of people have begun to integrate the idea of being safe into their travel. For example, the recent attacks in Mumbai… I think the combination of the ‘depressed’ economy and the understanding that there is danger and safety in all travel makes this an excellent time to travel. Like Egypt, which is supposed to be a safe & popular place, but after the attacks, there were no tourists, and there was extraordinary security, so you can see there is a silver lining in these attacks – taking security much more seriously. Dangerous yet beautiful and cheap places

Well, I was in Somalia during X-Mas, and I must say I stayed in the nicest hotel and I paid $40, and I had cappuccinos for 50 cents! There is a certain attraction to places that other tourists don’t want to go to. Places like Kurdistan are beautiful in spring time, but most people won’t believe that you can go to Iraq and stay in a nice hotel and go hiking in the mountains… We tend to obsess about the violence. Nobody writes a story that says ‘nothing happened today, everything is fine’.

Remember to…

Stay away from tourists. In a foreign country, I guarantee that you’d be much safer if you take a local person into your confidence, and travel with them and stay in low-key places… If you were a terrorist, and you wanted to cause problems in a country, what would you attack…? The tourism infrastructure.

Secondly, get away from touts. I always recommend forming relationships with people in those countries before you head over there, or find people in similar professions or areas of interest, so your trip will be much more rewarding. I’ve used the Internet to talk to people in these countries… I tell people I’m coming to their country and what would they recommend is a great place to stay… Typically I’ve never ever been steered wrong by someone who’s not in the tourism industry giving me advice.

On the border, they don’t fire at each other anymore… thanks to a DEAD SOLDIER, says Pathikrit Payne

In the last week of February, when the news of the revolt by the personnel of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) started pouring in, India’s Border Security Force (BSF) was put on alert as per the Standard Operation Procedure. A mutiny by a border guarding force of a neighbouring nation is no ordinary incident and could have had many ramifications. Yet what sent a near shockwave across the BSF top brass was the news of the brutal killing of the BDR Director General, Shakil Ahmed, a man BSF would find difficult to forget for quite sometime to come.

Circa 2001 – April 18 was a red letter day in the history of BSF. On that day nearly sixteen BSF jawans were brutally murdered by personnel of BDR in the Kakripara border outpost on the Indo-Bangladesh border. More shocking was the manner in which some of the dead BSF men were then tied to poles like animals and carried away in Bangladesh. Initially, despite the outrage, the Government of India prevented the matter getting blown out of proportion by simply sending a strong message to the Bangladesh government. But spouting Indo-Bangla friendship was quite difficult for those at BSF to digest. So while the relationship between India and Bangladesh wasn’t much affected, in between BSF and BDR, unofficially albeit, relationship reached its nadir. And occasionally BSF, with its superior firepower, continued to prove to BDR as to who the big brother was. No one then had perhaps dreamt even in a dream that in a few years’ time, it would be the same BSF which would grieve with moist eyes the death of the BDR top brass.

In the last couple of years, things took a complete U-turn for the better between the BSF and BDR. When Major General Shakil Ahmed took over the reign as the Director General of BDR, it was a major initiative on his part ably complimented by the previous Director General of BSF; AK Mitra who decided to take matters ahead keeping aside the baggage of the past. The deteriorating security condition inside Bangladesh and the subsequent coming into power of the army backed caretaker government in Bangladesh also helped the matter. As a senior BSF officer on condition of anonymity stated, "the most horrifying fear is always the fear of the unknown. If you know what’s on the other side, much of the fear aroused by suspicion generally gets taken care of."

And that was exactly what Shakil Ahmed and AK Mitra started working on. Regular meetings at the Director General level, at the battalion commander level, at the sector commander level and flag meetings were institutionalised where all the pertinent cross border issues are discussed to make sure that issues don’t get blown out of proportion. The confidence building measures were taken a step ahead when 25 children (mostly of BSF personnel) from India were sent to Bangladesh where they were received at Benapole by BDR.

CPI(M) may pay dearly for allying with fundamentalists

CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat once termed the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) as the largest communal organisation in Kerala. But that was in the past. In a move smacking of rank political opportunism, the party has currently hitched its poll wagon to the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in search of Muslim votes.

The CPI(M) has managed to woo the PDP, led by Abdul Nazar Madani, the main accused in the 1998 Coimbatore bomb blasts. The PDP is now a de facto member of the Left Democratic Front (LDF).

Just what are the Left-PDP linkages? Hussein Randathani, LDF-backed independent candidate for the Ponnani Lok Sabha seat, is principal of the Muslim Educational Society-run college. He is close to both CPI(M) and PDP. His candidature has the backing of both Madani and Pinarayi Vijayan, CPI(M) state secretary. Observers say the plan is to corner the votes of groups generally not in line with IUML, which supports the Congress. IUML still has the upper hand in local Muslim politics, but there are a few challengers now. Prominent among them is PDP. In jail, Madani had supported the Congress-led United Democratic Front; out of it, he moved to the LDF because of his political compulsions.

Trouble lies ahead for the LDF. The investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the Coimbatore blasts has taken a new turn. A key witness – Mani, alias Yousuf – has revealed that the daughter of Salam, a close associate of Indian Mujahideen co-founder, Riyaz Bhatkal, had once stayed with Madani’s wife Sufiya. The case – which has crucial eyewitness depositions against Madani – has the potential to hurt the Left coalition. Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan had promised a probe into the new charges.

But Home Minister K Balakrishnan had ruled this out. Then the CM asked top police officials for a status report on all Madani-related cases. When the PDP leader was released, four state ministers, including Home Minister Balakrishnan, had shared the dais with him. There could be other Leftists too who were seen with him. Besides, already many Muslim bodies oppose Madani and his PDP for its suspected terror links. With elections approaching, this is the last thing that the Leftists want.

The above mentioned cases clearly indicate that despite there being six players in the DTH segment, there are still a lot of loopholes that need to be addressed. “Most people who have DTH installed in their houses would vouch for the pathetic customer service that they have to bear with and there is no transparency in the charges that are being levied on them,” avers a media analyst on conditions of anonymity. In fact, it does not matter which brand you pick as there are issues with the customer service being offered by each player. It's not that these companies don’t have customer care centers but most customers believe that they are inadequate in taking concrete action towards their complaints. What’s more is that there are customers who have complained that some DTH call centers do not even provide something as basic as a complaint number leave alone any follow up or corrective action!

The people who are already using a DTH service also complain that most of the time there are arbitrary deductions from their pre-paid account and no explanations are given. This problem can be easily addressed by the introduction of a post-paid system for DTH, under which these operators would be required to give an itemised bill for all the charges that were levied on a particular customer for a particular month.

However, unfortunately, currently no Indian operator offers a post paid DTH. Add to it, the current set top boxes are even locked, which means if one has bought the set top box from Tata Sky, and does not want to continue with it for any reason then the only way out for the person concerned would be to purchase a new set top box. “The Indian DTH industry is currently at a very nascent stage and it is only when the penetration increases that we should be really looking at unlocked set top boxes” reasons Vikram Kaushik, MD, Tata Sky. It is ironic that while these players are spending crores of rupees to rope in multiple brand ambassadors, they are unable to put in place an accountable and efficient customer grievance handling system, which is the need of the hour.

As of now, the best hope for the Indian consumer is the intensifying competition in the Indian DTH industry, when supply would outstrip demand. In fact, the day when these DTH operators find it difficult to lure in new customers, would be the day when they would start looking - or being forced to look into - such essential consumer demands. Until then, however, the waiting game continues.

TSI Five-O: A remarkably well blended and powerful story

Sean Penn’s Oscar winning portrayal of Harvey Milk, an American homosexual activist who went on to became California’s first openly gay elected supervisor is all it is made out to be. Under the direction of Gus Van Sant, Penn nails all the elements of the iconic, humorous, kind and focused campaigner with great intensity and pertinent body language. And then there’s the fast-paced script with a relevant persuasion by Dustin Lance Black, who brilliantly fuses archival news footage showing the atrocities committed on innocent civilians who have different sexual orientation and some passionate yet natural performances by Emile Hirsch (Cleve), Alison Pill (Anne) and Josh Brolin (Dan).

Milk’s narrative in the form of a recording as a contingent to his assassination marks his journey from an average camera merchant to the city supervisor and Van Sant has been successful in capturing Milk’s revolutionary ideology matched with realistic techniques and a strong will. Kudos to the screenwriter for a brilliant narrative and of- course Penn, who shows that when it comes to acting that can move hearts, he’s quite the man! Milk ends up more than just a biopic, it quietly inspires too!

Award functions are all about perfect smiles and rehearsed quips, but there’s nothing more interesting than stars being caught off guard! While Brad Pitt, whose wife Angelina Jolie was in the running for Best Actress, quite conspicuously kept sitting when Kate Winslet received a standing ovation for winning the award, his ex Jennifer Aniston was caught sniggering when he lost out to Sean Penn for the Best Actor award! Sitting right behind Penn, Jen’s expression was easiliy caught on camera. Sadly, no awards for staying real!

All along, those who have spewed hatred against India and actually tried their best to destroy India – Dawood Ibrahim, Maulana Masood Azhar, Omar Sheikh – have been treated as heroes in Pakistan. Well, the heroes and their sidekicks have decided that even Pakistan can be a happy hunting ground for them. Truth be told, Pakistan was launched on a journey towards being a failed state way back in October 1951, when the first Prime Minister of the country Liaqat Ali Khan was assassinated. By the way, the assassination remains a mystery till date.

The lesson for the average Pakistani should be very clear. You cannot run a modern nation state by blindly following a Holy Book and its preaching. Islam is wonderful as long as it is an article of faith and a way of life. It can be terribly destructive if you've decided that Islam dictates the Constitution, the jurisprudence, the economy and the society of a country. There was a time when educated elite of Pakistan only had contempt for the ‘fundoos’; wishfully thinking they were immune to their depredations. Even for them, the hungry wolf is now at their doorstep.

It is a final wake up call even for Uncle Sam. For decades, America has mollycoddled, pampered and indulged Pakistan and its ruling elite to pursue ‘strategic’ objectives that were considered more important than the emergence of Pakistan as a modern nation. Unfortunately, for Barack Obama, the biggest strategic threat to United States is the ‘descent into chaos’ by Pakistan.

And there is a wake up call even for tub-thumping Indians who are prone to saying “Serves you right” to Pakistan. The biggest victim of a collapse of Pakistan into jehadi maelstrom will be India. You perhaps belong to the majority who think that the defeat of Pakistan and the creation of Bangladesh was a great Indian achievement. It might just become one of India's worst...

And the plans? The new Vishrambaug Wada will consist of special suites for the governor and CM. There will be 136 A/C rooms, auditorium, press conference room, gymnasium, dining hall, executive dining hall, library, kitchenette, staff canteen, laundry, CCTV cameras at the main entrance, internet café, etc. Drainage water will be processed and recycled for use. What more, the building will be earthquake-resistant! So far, not so good...

Because then started the sticky part – delays. Though the project was to be completed in November 2008 at an expense of Rs 51 crores, huge objectives led to the expected delays, which consequently led to a Frankenstein-like cost escalation reported to be between Rs 25-50 crores. While Bhujbal wanted to complete the project before the Vidhan Sabha elections, realising that the same was next to impossible, he called an emergency meeting of all officials concerned with a simple objective – at least build the outer structure!

It is strange how a simple building can attain such complex ramifications that finally, all that remains of the objective is the outer shell... But isn't that true of almost all political ambitions?

This refers to the Special Report "The Death Manual" by Manish Macwan (TSI, May 24, 2009), The Madras, Delhi and the Gujarat High courts have very rightly given the verdict that no human being should be allowed to go into the sewerage and drainage lines to clear blocks. It is shameful to see that even in this era of developed technology, men are being employed to go into the drains or sewerages for cleaning and many a times it proves to be fatal for the workers, as they are not provided with necessary safety tools such as oxygen masks, helmets, goggles, air blowers, safety belts torches etc. This age long practice continues on a large scale in almost all the towns and cities of our country resulting in the death of a number of manhole scavenger. It is the responsibility of municipal authorities to stop this inhuman act and employ mechanical devices to get the blocks cleared. The government should enact the law to stop this practice.

We had expected to find Simarjeet Kaur in the dumps. After all, four from her family had been killed in police encounters, and she herself was widowed twice. Instead, we found her smiling. She was proud, she said, to belong to a family of martyrs, and it did not in the least matter to her that they continued to be branded as terrorists.

Simarjeet lives in Blaggan village of Gurdaspur district with her two daughters and son. When her first husband, Ranjit Singh, was killed in an encounter in 1985 she married his younger brother Sukhdev Singh. But seven years later Sukhdev too met the same fate. The only thing that saddens her is that the Khalistan movement failed. “Had it not, I would get all my lost happiness back,” she said. As we talked I sensed no signs of gloom or remorse in the family, and Simarjeet sounded serene when she said she was fully aware of her husband’s deeds. “What matters is not that he died, for he could have died of snakebite too! What alone matters is what he died for, that he died for his community,” she explained.

And with that her brow visibly darkened. “I am inordinately proud of the fact that my husband got martyred,” she said, raising her voice for the first time. On the cot beside their mother were Satinderpal Singh, who is studying engineering and daughter Bhupinder Kaur. “The one thing none of us can ever bear is any kind of talk against our Guru and community,” said Satinder. “And should the need arise I would have no trouble taking up arms myself!”
